MEP Engineering

MEP Engineering and the Research & Development Tax Credit

The R&D Tax Credit recognizes engineering as a hard science along with chemistry, biology and physics. Additionally, many engineering firms do not realize they are engaging in R&D activities on a daily basis. Typically, engineers encounter complex issues, evaluate various solutions, and solve problems through an iterative design process.

The R&D Tax Credit provides an incentive for this process. Whether firms provide Civil, Structural, or MEP engineering services, there is a high probability that they will have qualifying activities.

Examples of Qualified R&D Activities

    • Developing designs for the mechanical systems for a new or rehabilitation of an existing building. These systems can include air handling requirements, ductwork routing, central plant design, and control systems
    • Developing designs for the electrical systems for a new or rehabilitation of an existing building. These systems can include power supply and distribution, wiring layouts, lighting, power regulation, fire detection and protection systems
    • Developing designs for the plumbing systems for a new or rehabilitation of an existing building. These systems can include potable water supply and distribution, collection and transport of wastewater, in addition to process piping for gas delivery systems in medical, manufacturing and laboratory settings
    • Utilizing computer aided design (CAD) and building information modeling (BIM) during the conceptual, design
development, schematic design and construction documents phases
